How to Choose a Wedding Photographer Q&A: Deyla Huss

One of the absolute vendor essentials for your wedding is a photographer. The photos captured on your big day are something you’ll frame in your home, pass down to your children, and be able to look back on with fond memories for years to come. Along with a wedding film, photos are the best way to remember one of the most special days of your life. Choosing a professional photographer is obviously so important! To help you discover what you should look for when making this decision, we spoke with Deyla of Deyla Huss Photography. We’ve worked with her countless times, and not only do we always have a blast with her, but we love seeing the beautiful photos she captures.

How did you get into the industry?

Shortly after I got married, my husband gifted me a film camera because he thought I would have fun with it. Never picking up a “real” camera prior other than a small point and click, I was fascinated by how light and movement was captured and self-taught myself how to really use a camera. Shortly after, I was asked by friends and family to capture their loved ones, and then my first wedding referral came in, and I was so excited to learn the wedding day process and really do an amazing job for my first wedding clients. Before the wedding, I did everything I could to build my knowledge and hone in on my craft. Once I photographed that wedding, I remember coming back from that saying how amazing it was to capture something so special and thinking, “I would LOVE to do that again!”

I have a background in advertising and marketing and used that side to start networking and marketing this business. From there I really just dove in head first and started getting referrals for weddings and meeting some really amazing and talented vendors in the industry.

What makes a great photographer?

Not only is having talent in photography important, but one that is constantly learning and perfecting their craft. Being personable and good with client relationships is also important to help get to know your clients so you know how to be a great photographer for them. Paying attention to detail, knowing light and being able to be versatile with any situation you are put in is very important.

Why do you think photography is so important for a wedding?

Being able to capture those moments happening that you may miss or not even know are happening are those that are cherished for years to come. And hiring a professional photographer to make sure your wedding is not only photographed in a way to tell the story of one of your most cherished events, but also help guide you through the day and knowing how to work with any situation presented.

What is your favorite part about being a wedding photographer?

So many! But really, how lucky am I to be surrounded by love and happiness, and it’s my job?

How do you stay inspired in your field?

Making sure you take some time to photograph things other than weddings that you’re passionate about! This helps me not get into a rut and opens up opportunity for growth in so many ways.

What are your recommendations for choosing a wedding photographer?

Set up a meeting in person with a few photographers whose work you love, and get to know each other and see if you truly mesh with that photographer personally, as well as their style. Ask to see an entire gallery from a real wedding to get an idea of what the wedding day looks like in its entirety. Making sure they are insured and having back-up professional gear are always recommended.
